Smart FPS: Treating Players Intelligently

Far Cry 3

It’s no secret that the first person shooter is considered the ‘dumb’ genre of video games, but recently some writers and designers have been trying to change that. Over at RPS they’re having a series of interviews with the writers of Far Cry 3 and Spec-Ops: The Line, both of which aspire to be better and more interesting stories than the usual FPS fare. Whether they succeed, I’m looking at you Far Cry, is up for debate but it’s good we’re having this conversation in the first place.

Of course, it does seem a little redundant considering how the best written and most meaningful game this year was a first person shooter. But I’m glad we’re having this conversation regardless.
